Interview Best Practices & Preparation

Prepare with confidence using these practical tips for virtual and in-person interviews. From setting up your environment to sharing your experience effectively, this section is designed to help you show up ready, polished, and authentic.

Set Yourself Up for Success

Set Yourself Up for Success

Create an environment that supports your success by ensuring clear lighting and audio, positioning yourself for strong eye contact—on camera or in person—and minimizing distractions. For virtual interviews, test your technology in advance. For in-person conversations, plan ahead so you can arrive feeling calm and prepared. Keep key materials nearby, including your resume, notes, and a few thoughtful questions.

Prepare Your Best Examples

Review your resume and identify three to five examples that reflect your strengths, accomplishments, and relevant experience. Focus on stories that demonstrate your impact and show how you approach challenges, collaboration, and growth.

Prepare Your Best Examples
Use the PARLA Model

Use the PARLA Model

VSP Vision interviews often include behavioral questions, and the PARLA model can help you structure clear, compelling answers. Describe the Problem, explain your Action, share the Result, highlight what you Learned, and explain how you’ve Applied that learning moving forward.

Bring Curiosity and Clarity

Take time to prepare thoughtful questions about the role, team, and organization. It’s also helpful to reflect on what motivates you and what you’re looking for in your next opportunity so you can speak with confidence and clarity about your goals.

Additional Resources

You may also find these helpful as you prepare:

  • How will I know who I’m interviewing with?

Your recruiter will share the names, titles, and roles of each interviewer ahead of time.

  • What should I wear?

Business‑casual attire that helps you feel confident and polished.

  • What technology do I need?

A laptop or desktop with a reliable camera and microphone. Test your setup beforehand.

  • How long are interviews?

Typically 30–60 minutes; some roles may include multiple rounds.

  • What kinds of questions should I expect?

Most are behavioral — the PARLA model is a great way to prepare.

  • Can I ask questions during the interview?

Absolutely — we encourage thoughtful questions about the role and culture.

  • When will I hear back?

Your recruiter will communicate timing and next steps as quickly as possible.

  • What if I need accommodations?

We’re committed to an inclusive experience. Let your recruiter know how we can support you.

  • I interviewed but didn’t get the role. What should I do next?

Didn't get the role? Don't get discouraged.

Send a brief thank-you note to the recruiter and interview team, then take a few minutes to reflect on the experience. Consider how your background aligned with the role, any questions that were challenging, and whether there were skills or accomplishments you wish you'd highlighted more clearly. Use those insights to strengthen future interviews.

Remember, a rejection doesn't define your value as a candidate. Sometimes the selected applicant simply has experience that more closely matches the team's immediate needs. If you're interested in the organization, keep an eye on future opportunities—many successful hires aren't made on the first application.

We’re Here to Support You
